PAT Testing
What is PAT testing?
PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing. A portable appliance is an electrical appliance used at your premises from factory machinery to the kettle in the canteen.
The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers to comply with the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment. This in effect requires the implementation of a systematic and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing.
Why do I need to do it?
The Health & Safety Executive states that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances. There were 28,000 fires in commercial properties in 2005 according to the Governments Fire Statistics Monitor. You have obligations under 6 separate Acts to test all of your equipment periodically, most advise once a year.
